Crushed coral is a great tool for raising the pH of your water. We use it at 1 pound of crushed coral per 10 gallons of water when mixed in with our gravel. Crushed coral dissolves continuously over time. The lower your pH is, the faster it dissolves. As the pH rises, it slows down how fast the coral dissolves. Crushed coral adds a bit of hardness to the water and it significantly boosts KH which buffers pH from swinging.

I have repeatedly ordered the bag of crushed coral from Aquarium Co-Op. I add a tablespoon to my aquariums as needed to keep kH above “Low” levels. I highly suggest rinsing the coral before adding to aquarium to prevent very short term cloudiness. Coral can sprinkled on light color substrate or added into filtration. This is a good and effective product at budget friendly price.

I was able to keep everything except neocaridina shrimp in my aquariums. It turns out the city water has no buffer in it. Adding the recommended amount of this crushed coral to my canister filters and substrate has made all the difference.
