Coarse sponge pad is a replacement for throwaway cartridges in aquarium filters. Not only are the cartridges costly, they are also bad for the environment. Coarse sponge pads can be reused for many years with normal use. With this porosity of the foam, they are nearly clog-proof. They also filter out larger particles of waste before getting to your fine filter pads or bio rings.

1

Coarse Sponge for Mechanical Filtration

Mechanical filtration refers to sponge, foam, and polishing pads that physically strain out debris from the water, much like a coffee filter. We chose a coarse sponge with large pores because it's good for blocking most debris like fish poop and dead leaves without clogging up so quickly that you have to constantly clean it.

Customizable to Fit Any Filter

Whether you have a hang-on-back, canister, or sump filter, this coarse sponge pad can fit them all. Just grab a pair of scissors and cut the sponge into the right shape. To clean it, simply remove the sponge from the filter and squeeze it multiple times in old aquarium water until all the brown gunk is removed.

Great Alternative

These coarse sponge pads are a much better alternative than replaceable cartridges for HOB filters. Just lightly rinse the dirt from the sponge once a month. I have some used for over 3 years. Time to replace them.

Oh what a sponge :-)

I watch ACO for most of my knowledge about fish keeping (PS 1st tank). Cory gave me the confidence to ‘hot rod’ my canister filter.
I was having cloudy water. This is what the new sponges accomplish! No water change; just new filters!
I’m blown away!!!

Savings, Safety, and Clarity

When I first heard about using the course sponge pad and other media, besides pre-made materials in the petshop it scared me. I watched a video on the AquariumCoop website and gave it a try years ago and I was convinced. It worked so well. My fish are healthy and happy and I save lots of coins!

Versatile Game Changer

I watched Cory's video on hacking HOB filters. So.....I immediately ordered the coarse sponge pad. Next, he suggested a pre-filter for the intake. Unfortunately, even the smallest size wouldn't fit so alas....BUMMER. When my box from Aquarium Co-Op arrived I cut the sponge to size added it to my Aquaclear and removed the carbon. Then, I thought what if I cut a piece of sponge and then slice a small pocket and then slip it on the end of the intake tube....and you know what....it worked. I placed one on the HOB intake and on the powerhead intake. It's like having a sponge filter that my fish enjoy snacking from and it keeps the big stuff out of the filter. Been running it this way for about a month and I think it has been a success!

Easy to fit to purpose. helped in upgrading my gravel vac for fry and java moss

I got this pad to help add a more course filter to my fluval canister 307 filter and I was able to cut it to size easily. So far I haven't noticed it picking up a ton, but I also have a prefilter on the intake which captures a lot. My favorite use of this so far has been in a tank where I have fry in with water changes. my fry are very curious about the tubes I use for pulling water out. I cut a small piece of this pad and put in the gravel vac and it helped to keep my fry and java moss from being sucked up but still allowing detritus to be picked up.

Great Sponge Pad

I've found nothing of this quality locally, so ACOOP has me covered with fast shipping and an easy ordering experience. I removed the filter cartridges and replaced them with these course sponge pads that can be reused, saving tons of money over time.

All my Aquaclear filters are full of these.

After I watched (and read) about hot rodding filters, these course sponge pads are a blessing! Total no-brainer. Never clogs, last forever, cost effective...don't hesitate, just buy them.

Other applications

I also use this to spawn egg scattering fish. Throw it on the bottom of the tank. The eggs fall down through the pad so the parents can’t eat the eggs.

Hot Rod your hang on back filter Instantly

I put a Fluval70 on a 55gal and replaced the fine course sponge that came with it
knowing full well that it would clog quick. I cut in two layers of Cory's sponge to fit, and of course the flow has noticeably improved 100 times better...and the cycling for growing bacteria was easier to get started as well. All i did was put the bio max bag in another aquarium for a week or so and then placed it on top of the cut in sponges for the water to flow through on the way out..
Im really glad i bought more than one pad, it easily by far the best made sponge ive ever used. Its the correct density for getting the best of 3 worlds..
Flow, growing good bateria, and just plain old filtering.
Got Murphy sticker too!!! SWEET!!

Great Addition to Aqua-Tech 30-60 Hang on Back Filter

After watching Cory's video on YouTube we decided to use this as an addition to our HOB Aqua-tech 30-60. We cut and installed them with no trouble at all. We left the cartridges in until the sponges are setup with beneficial bacteria. Nice to know that we will not have to purchase cartridges anymore. We also added the large pre-filter sponge which should give us plenty of space for that beneficial bacteria to grow. Thanks Cory and Aquarium Coop for saving us money.

Very versatile!

Good size, very versatile. I'm using it in front of my overflow to prevent my Lambchop Rasbora's from doing a "Finding Nemo" where Nemo was told by Gil that "All drains lead to the ocean!"

Idea #802 Overflow prefilter - Save your little guys

I've used this filter for a few projects but I think this one is the most substantial. I prevented small shrimp and fish from going overboard into my overflow box.

I cut three pieces off the large pad and lined them up against the guards and pushed the teeth of the guards through. This filter has tons of huge pores that are the perfect size as a barrier for fish while being large enough not to clog.

This project took 10 minutes, a pair of scissors and some super glue. I recommend this setup with this pad because of the size of the pores. I haven't seen other filter pads with the same size and amount of pores.

This filter is going to be huge for the hobby as people figure out what it can be used for.

Good Product

I rigged up some of this filter material under the outflow of my HOB filter. It helps buffer the water flow for my betta and keeps floating plants from getting dragged under. However, it isn't so dense that the overall water flow is too negatively impacted.

Sponge pad, course

We use these s product for different things. The major use right now, I raise angel fish, I put this around the filter intake so the fry don't get sucked up. It works fantastic. I just cut what I need, roll it to the size of the intake tube and hot glue it together, including squeezing the bottom together for a tight fit. Perfect!! It also adds some more bio to the tank. So, I did this with all my tanks. Plus I have the co-op sponge filters which I absolutely love.

Great Quality Sponge

Best customer service I've ever worked with!

C

These are great filter media if you don’t want to use 25-30 ppi foam because it may clog too quickly. Should last nearly forever and rarely need rinsing. I do wish they had a 20 ppi option, but 15 is still solid.

Universally useful must have

Never knew i would need this and the uses seem to be endless. Filter material, flow diffuser, shrimp play ground! Will definitely keep this on hand from here on out.

I use these pads in my corner box filters. The coarse pads don’t reduce water flow, don’t clog fast and are easy to rinse out and reuse. I highly recommend these coarse pads. 💚

Replaced carbon filters

Bought this product and the fine filter pad to replace my carbon filters in my Aqueon70 Quietflow hob filter. Using it along with Seachem Matrix. Has kept the water clean so far and was very easy to cut for a custom fit
