Rotala h'ra is a popular stem plant because of its gorgeous, sunset hues of orange, pink, and red under high lighting. Plus, its feathery, thin leaves provide an interesting texture to the midground or background of the tank. Give it plenty of light, nutrients, and CO2, and it will reward you with vibrant coloration and creeping growth via side shoots.

Note: when you first receive the plant, the leaves were grown out of water and may have round, coin-like leaves (seen in the first and second photo). These leaves will melt back so the plant can produce new leaves that are grown underwater, which looks like short pine needles (seen in the third photo).
How to Plant Rotala H’ra Aquarium Plant
1. Remove the potted plant from plastic basket, and split the rock wool in half.
2. Carefully remove the plant roots from the rock wool, and make sure to remove all the small, yellow fertilizer balls. Wash off any remaining debris.
3. Use planting tweezers or your fingers to plant each stem deeply, at least 2 to 3 inches into the ground, which means the substrate may cover some of the bottom leaves.
4. Don’t plant the stem plants all in a single bunch but rather individually with a little space between so that the roots have some room to grow.
5. If the plant keeps popping out of the ground, try inserting the stem at an angle or wrap a plant weight at the bottom of the stem to keep them anchored. If the stems have no roots, some people will float them at the surface until they develop roots and then plant them into the substrate.
How to Grow Rotala H’ra
— Rotala h’ra care requires medium skill level, so start by using medium to high lighting between 20-50+ PAR to prevent "leggy" stems (where the bottom portion of the plant starts dropping leaves). Also, add medium amounts of CO2 gas.
— Why is my rotala h’ra melting? This stem plant is grown out of the water at the farm and may have round, coin-like leaves. Once the plants arrive to us, we begin the process of converting them to their underwater form, which have leaves that look like short pine needles. The plant you receive may be half-converted and still need time to adjust to life under water. To help speed up the transition, provide plenty of light and nutrients to encourage new leaves to sprout as the old leaves melt away. Consider floating the stems at the surface until it grows more roots and can be easily planted into the substrate.
— Why is my rotala h’ra turning yellow or brown? If your stem plant is getting enough light, it may be a nutrient deficiency, so measure the nitrate level using a multi-test strip. Dose with Easy Green all-in-one fertilizer until the water has 20-50 ppm nitrate.
— How to trim rotala h’ra: If the plant is too tall or the bottom half of the stem has lost its leaves, prune off the top portion and replant it.
How to Propagate Rotala H’ra
Stem plants can be easily propagated by trimming off the top half of the plant and replanting it in another location. The original plant will continue growing upwards from where it was cut and may even create multiple branches.

I ordered 4 pots of rotala h’ra without looking at the weather. I ordered them with the ups 2nd day shipping option. It was about 8° when they were out for delivery. When I got them they were a little cold, but man do they package their stuff well. Plants were still vibrant red. I dropped them in my tank in the pots to acclimate for a couple days. They stayed 99% perfect. Out of 4 pots I lost maybe 3 stems. The rest got separated and planted and is doing fantastic over a week later and showing new growth.

I got this plant thinking it was going to be a lot like these others I’ve purchased from other vendors. When my order arrived after a long trip to California the leaves still had color actual pink and reddish color not just green starter colors. I planted them and 3 weeks later… BOOM !! Full color! No dead stems at all . Very happy indeed 😂‼️

I purchased it for the color variation. It breaks all the green tones inside the aquarium. However the pinkish color mostly comes through with the aquarium light on. It is still unique and worth getting. So far 2 weeks in and thriving.

The plants arrived looking a little worse for wear. I separated them, put them in the water and by the next day they all looked really nice.. One of them looks pretty bad. Not sure it's going to make it but the rest look really nice.. I've never dealt with a natural aquarium before, but I'm pretty happy with the way it looks.

Ordered a bunch of different plants, all arrived looking good. Packaging was done very nicely with a warming pack, it was 30 degrees when plants were delivered and all showed no effects from low temps.

I love the rotala H'Ra all in all. It gives my 220 gallon a nice splash of orangish red color. The only down side of this plant, is how delicate the leaves and stems are. I'd highly suggest to trim off the bottom portion of the plant before planting to avoid the bottom leaves from falling off and looking leggy.

First delivery showed up completely melted. Replacement delivery isn't looking too positive either and is kind of an eyesore in the tank.

Update - My replacement plant looked worse than the original one. Customer service is still great, but I opted to get store credit so I could go pick up a healthy one instead of waiting for another dead plant to arrive in the mail. Not sure why this one plant they can't seem to ship successfully. Maybe I just had bad luck.
My Rotala H'ra didn't show up how I'd hoped it would look. Especially for a plant known to be a showcase pop of color -- yikes. I knew to expect round, emersed leaves, and some browning is also expected from the switch to underwater life but... these were in pretty sad shape. That said, customer service is top notch and offered to replace it. I'll update when the replacement arrives.

I'm sure part of it had to due with the extreme weather that was ongoing at the site of delivery, but most of the stems came being really close to DOA. Again it was incredibly hot where the plants were getting shipped to but was still slightly let down by the quality of the plants that arrived.

Plant came in good shape, there was some wiltjng or brown stems but the majority is healthy! I paid for faster shipping because I wanted to get them planted as soon as I could. The plant was a pretty good size, I split it into 3 tiny clumps to plant all together in the corner of my tank
